This weeks
"Interview With a Manager", press team have been talking with
Nationwide Division One's first Manager of the Month winner Mike Overill. A
deserved winner of the managers award with a fantastic start to the season,
its been a pleasure to have Mike take part in this interview.
I have
been a fan of the Dons all my life and feel it is my duty to bring success to
the club despite the well publicized off field problems the long suffering
fans have had to endure and take them back to the premier where a club with
such a fairy tale history deserve to be.
1. Do
You feel you can maintain current form and win division 1?
I would
like to start by congratulating my team on their superb performances of late
and saying to any of our critics that this is no fluke. We have some
outstanding personnel at this club Dave (Nielsen) has grabbed most of the
headlines for his six goals this season, but a lot of the credit must go to
David Connelly his strike partner and the midfield for creating the majority
of the goals. I feel that if the squad stays injury free then it is not a
question of if we will win the league but more one of how will the lads adapt
to life in the premiership!!
2.
How do you feel the new signings have settled in?
Well, I
knew a lot about Ben (Thatcher) from his previous spell at the club and I will
make no secret of the fact I am a huge admirer of his determination, pace and
all round defensive ability and feel that being able to get him for what I
believe was cut price just sealed the deal. I am also extremely impressed by
the way Ole (Solskjaer) and Vandevaart have settled in despite their large
price tags.
3. What
do you think of your chances in the cup?
Much
as it pains me to say, I feel I have to be realistic and say we are just in it
to make up the numbers, we got a creditable draw against Spurs who with no
disrespect, are I believe the weakest representatives from the premiership and
I just do not see how the likes of Ben, Kenny and Alan can possibly cope with
the likes of Fowler, Owen and Schevchenko from Sunderland and Liverpool. All
we can hope for is to win against the odds in true Wimbledon style.
4. What
tactical changes have you made since becoming manager?
Well
unlike former managers (Egil Olsen and Terry Burton) I truly believe in
playing to your strengths, I inherited a very attack minded squad with very
few players of real defensive quality and so had no real option but to take
the Keegan approach to managing i.e. you score 4 we'll score 5 which explains
why we have the best goal scoring record in the division.
5. Do
you have any plans to bring any one in?
Currently,
I do not feel I have the funds to finance any players of real quality and
refuse to take the Bradford approach of scouting players from old folks homes.
So I have to sell to buy and with no current interest shown in my transfer
listed trio of Mark, Neal or Shipps it may be a while before any signings are
made.
6. Was
there a disagreement between you and those you have sold or listed?
I sold
Juppy at the start of the season to man city because they allowed me to get
the money to sign Ben. Mark, Trond and Neal are all favorite players of mine
but the time had come to let them go for the right money and we are all still
on speaking terms. I must, however, get of my chest that there has been an
internal disagreement between myself and Neil Shipperly, I told him I was
unhappy with his level of commitment toward the club and that he was transfer
listed with immediate effect.
I would
like to end by saying that although I do not agree with the way the club is
currently being run with the whole Milton Keynes thing going on, I would like
to thank the Board for allowing me the chance to manage the club I have
supported all my life and prevent the famous name of Wimbledon sinking into
mediocrity.
Thanks
Mike

Adam
Willan is the subject of this weeks "Interview with a
Manger" and its quite a frank one too. This makes for an
interesting read about what Adams feelings are towards some of
his players and how he hopes to turn Tottenham's fortunes
around.
Right where do
I start?, well I knew this job was always going to be a big
challenge. With no experience and no support from the media I
was pleasantly surprised when I was handed the job as manager at
such a big club like Tottenham Hotspur. I would like to thank
the board for their confidence and giving me the chance to take
a underachieving team back to the big time, they have given me a
big budget and there will be no excuses if I can not produce.
When taking up
the job I knew I had the footballing knowledge to be successful
but was well aware that I had to learn everything about being a
premiership manager and I had to learn fast. It all started well
with a 4-0 win at Sunderland and a deal lined up to bring Louis
Saha to the club to partner Teddy and Sergei in attack, this
management game is easy I was thinking but how I have learned.
Soon after I was shocked to see Louis Saha's name had been
removed from the completed transfer list and that the Fulham
manager had pulled out of the deal at the last minute. To say I
wasn't happy is a understatement!.
The following
weeks have done nothing to convince me that my team is going to
be successful with a shocking run of form with only a draw with
Ipswich to show in the league and finally a win against wolves
in the cup, but no offence doesn't really say much about my team
as they are bottom of the first division.
I have learnt
allot about my team in the last few weeks and I'm afraid the
outcome of my findings is not good. Tottenham has always been
built upon hard work and good team spirit and that is the least
that the white hart faithful deserve, the fans have been great
but I wish I could say that about my team!. I have been shocked
with the total lack of a work ethic from my players and the
complete lack of enthusiasm from the players in trying to change
the clubs fortunes. Some of the big players need to stand up and
be counted and I don't mind naming names. For one Teddy
Sheringham has been a disgrace to the great Tottenham shirt, he
was signed because of his apparent love of the club and desire
to fight to the end for Tottenham FC, but I never saw anything
more than total laziness and incompetence. I thought enough was
enough and took the decision that he was bad for the club and
slapped him on the transfer list. Other players that I have been
disappointed with are Christian Ziege, Anderton, Carr, Perry and
Freund all of them have shown a total lack of respect to the
club and every fan that spends their money on tickets to come
and support their team.
Allot of them
fans would give anything to play for the club and if the players
cared a bit less about the money they were making and gave all
their efforts to winning games the club would not be lying in
the position it is. But I would like to point out the effort
made by Gus Poyet and Sergei Rebrov they have embarrassed the
other players with their total commitment to the cause and would
like to thank them for that.
So after
getting that out its time for the future, I have been assured
that my position is safe and will be given the time to turn the
club around. I am determined to get the club in the position it
should be. Hopefully the players will now stand up and be
counted, I didn't want to have a moan to the public but I
thought it was about time I told the fans how it is and give the
players a kick up the a** which will hopefully sort them out.
I would just
like to tell all the fans that success will come and to keep
their faith in the team, Saviola has been here a few weeks now
and I am glad to see him and Rui Costa who arrived last week
have started to settle in. The players have got the full support
of the club and are committed to making sure they settle and
enjoy life at the club, which can only be good for Tottenham on
and off the field, (hope you are listening villa board) so for
now I just hope for happy times at white hart lane and just like
to say thanks to the fans for their continued support.
Cheers Adam

Nottingham
Forrest manager Adam Pyke is the subject of this weeks
"Interview with a Manager". We all may remember that
Notts Forrest were the first club to get into financial trouble
in Kick Off, but have since managed to turn the corner and have
a good looking squad for their troubles, which I'm sure their
fans would expect to do well in this years fight for the First
Division crown. Adam genuinely wants to give the Nottingham fans
something to shout about again, so read on to find out what Adam
has had to say so far.
Well,
it's been a bit of a stop start season really and I don't
personally think the team are playing as well as they know they
are capable of.
Although
we have been putting in some top class displays both at home and
on the road, we are just not getting the breaks we deserve but
that is something myself and the team are working very hard on
in training.
Since
the season began, I have got to know the players far better on a
personal level which always helps in a professional atmosphere
as our communication has come along in leaps and bounds because
this is the first club I have managed and it is a learning curve
for all of us.
Our
main aim this season is to strengthen the side and I think the
signings of M_Silvestre, L_Chadwick and B_Zamora represent this
as a positive step for the club.
I
watched these players closely in first team and reserve games
myself before spending the amounts of money I have on these
players and they have shown me the same faith I showed in them
when I brought them to the club.
With
regards to transfers, I am unhappy M_Harewood has left the club,
his view being that he wasn't getting a fair crack of the whip
but I'm sure everyone connected with Nottingham Forest Football
Club wishes him the best of luck with his new club Bradford
City.
I
would just like to thank the fans personally as they have got
behind myself and the team fully and, although they are not
getting the results they want, their fabulous support has
never wavered I can guarantee that things will pick up soon
and give the Red side of Nottingham something to be proud and
sing about.
This
club has been in the doldrums for far too long and I believe
that I am the man to take them back to the Premiership which is
where they belong but I have written us off for promotion for
this season as the team need more time to gel fully.
Thanks,
Adam Pyke. |

INTERVIEWS. No.9: SHEFF WED |

The
Kick Off team have traveled just down the road to Sheffield this
week from their Northern Headquarters to speak to Sheffield
Wednesday manager Joe Davies. Joe has a massive task in hand in
turning the fortunes around of one of England's big clubs that
have took a turn for the worse. Blame could be pointed in many
directs but hopefully Sheffield Wednesdays appointment of Joe
Davies will get thing moving in the right direction. Here's what
Joe has to day.
1.
So, tell us what you think Joe about your team's chances of
promotion.
Well,
the season so far has been a bit of a roller coaster ride for me
and my lads. At the moment we are lying 7th in Div. 1. We are
just two points away from 2nd place so with a few victories in
my favor I see a bright future for the lads. So, yes I can see
us getting promoted this season but it is going to take some
hard work and believe from the lads. In the Kick Off Cup I think
I am lagging behind the rest a bit but I think the league is
much more important to my team.
2.
You seem to have spent quite heavily this season Joe, what do
you think of your new signings and of course players leaving
your team?
Yes,
well I agree with you there, I have spent a lot of money. The
biggest being £20,750,000 on the great H_Larsson. I am a huge
fan of his so I feel I have spent money well on this legend. He
may have only scored one so far but he is settling well and I
can see plenty more goals from him. Earlier in the season I sold
A_Hinchcliffe to the other half of Sheffield for £4,000,000.
This to me was a big mistake, I needed to keep him in my team
but, hey, I was new to the managing world so it is
understandable. After that I felt I needed to strengthen my
defense so I have brought the Ox himself, T_Adams and the great
Brazilian brick wall, Aldiar. I also sold O_Morrison which came
as a shock to me because I felt he had a good future with me. I
feel I have spent my money well and I am pleased so far.
3.
And a word about your other players.
I
came here not knowing much about Wednesday and I found a young
Argentinian here, P_Bonvin. This guy started unbelievably good
with about 6 goals in 4 games! He was in great demand but I have
kept a tight hold on him. He hasn't been so prolific lately but
I have no fears with him. He will be a big player for me. I also
have big K_Pressman in the nets and he is serving me well I
feel. I need a figure like him in my team to help the young guns
out. Another player to do this is C_Palmer, who had also been
great for me.
4.
Anything else you wish to say, Joe?
Yes,
I would like to thank all of the managers who have loaned
players to me. This has been a huge help to me and is much
appreciated by the club and myself. So, thanks to Aston Villa,
Sheffield Utd, Chelsea and Liverpool I can see good things for
Wednesday in the future, if not now then there will be in the
coming seasons. But don't worry, we will be going up this season
and not the next!
Thank
you, I must go and work the lads now. Bye |

T
he Kick
Off news crew traveled to the capital last week week in order to
speak with Chelsea supremo Paul Rice. Paul has had a very
successful start to his reign at Stamford Bridge and
remained unbeaten until last weeks Kick Off Cup game defeat at
Ipswich. This interview took place just before last weeks Cup
game defeat but is still worth a read from the already highly
regarded manager.
The
big story this week has been your signing of former world player
of the year Ronaldo, how long did it take you to get your man?
Paul
Rice: - It has been well documented for some time that I have
been looking at the best forwards out there to pair with Jimmy
Floyd Hasslebaink. It is no secret that I missed out on Rivaldo
to Man Utd, but what is less known is that I also missed out out
on the signatures of Javier Saviola and Andriy Shevchenko,
Rivaldo and Shevchenko in particular were VERY close to being
Chelsea players, around £1m in both cases. When Ronaldo became
available I had to break the bank to get him.
Will
he give you the firepower you need to lift the title?
Paul
Rice: - Ask me with one game to go! At the start of the season I
thought I would be happy if we finish in the top half
It
was once said that forwards win games, defenses win titles, and
there is a great deal of truth in that. We have drawn to many
games however. If we could have won a few more games we would be
top. Our defense is doing a superb job to keep us unbeaten, so
hopefully the forwards can win games for us with the goal
scoring cutting edge he will bring. Who knows what the season
will bring, but with the start we have had it should be a good
season whatever happens, unless our forms dips dramatically.
Vetern
Gianfranco Zola has been playing as Hasslebaink’s strike
partner, does Ronaldo’s arrival spell the end of his Chelsea
career?
Pail
Rice: - Absolutely not, Zola is most important to Chelsea, and I
will be adjusting my tactics to suit him, In many ways he is
more suited to a midfield role anyway. So if anyone is
interested, he is not available
You
also missed out on the Manager of the month award, does that
disappoint you?
Paul
Rice: - The only award that matters to me is the Premier League
title, and how close we come to getting it. In many ways manager
of the month awards tend to act as a jinx in my experience. I
can only hope that this is the case with Liverpool!
Perhaps
someone who can only name 4 subs, including 2 goalkeepers, and
sent out a team which could only draw with lower league
opposition in kick-off cup does not deserve a manager of the
month award?
Paul
Rice: - Yes that was embarrassing, but we won 4-0 so not that
embarrassing. We are missing a lot of players through injury at
the moment, and Roberto Di Matteo has gone out on loan, so
things all came together at once. But
Sheff
Utd on the other hand are playing very well, and deserved their
draw, we have no complaints. I expect we will be playing them in
the premier league next season
But
you are still unbeaten
Paul
Rice: - Yes, I am obviously very happy with that, long may it
continue. The players deserve it though, as no one has yet
deserved any more than a point from them.
Di
Matteo is also on the transfer list, but has just gone out on
loan, what is going on there?
Paul
Rice: - He is for sale, he is getting a few games, and hopefully
playing his way into some bodies attention. He will be returning
to Chelsea at the end of the loan however, unless I get a
satisfactory bid. But he as well as de Goey, Ambrossetti and
Ferrer are available for transfer. I have received no bids as
yet, after the initial rush t0 make transfer at the start of the
season, it is becoming harder to sell players. I think I made
the right choice to sell players then, and begin to buy now that
the bubble is burst.
Well
thank you for the opportunity to give you my thoughts
Good
Luck |
