18th August 2003

Newcastle boss Matt Birch was delighted with the latest league win: "We played an experimental formation, a very attacking sweeper system with just one defender being covered by two defensive mids. This allowed the team to pile forward and that showed as we had 32 shots on goal, converting 5 of them. We knew that we would be open at the back but our midfield restricted L**ds to just 14 shots. It was a gamble that paid off big time with us easily winning 5-3.

"I was also very impressed with young Jenas' debut today. He came from Rotherham where the whole team relied on him. Being the only player of any class there, he had to carry the weight of the team on his shoulders which would be a tough task for an experienced pro, let alone a youngster like Jermaine. He came here with few expectations for this season. We had pencilled him in to gain his experience from the bench in his first season and I think that really took the weight off his shoulders and spurred him on to try and nail a starting spot. His endevours in training were enough to convince me to give him a chance and he didn't dissapoint. He is far from the finished article but if he is this good now, how good will he be in a couple of seasons !"

Arsenal have leaked early word that Turkish International midfielder Muzzy Izzet, who was to have reported to Wolverhaptom on loan has actually officially had his rights signed over to the club after a deal between the two clubs was made official late Sunday evening. The talented Turk never found his niche in Arsenal midfield and had been dispatched by Arsenal manager Gabe Frail on loan spells on several occasions.

Wolverhampton boss Ian McNaughton and Frail began discussing a more permanent move for Izzet after they ensured that the player would be on the grounds for training with the Wolverhampton side on Sunday, to get a full week of training in before this Saturday's Cup clash. McNaughton had approached Frail about a deal and Frail, known for his zest for developing young talents and desire to build an unrivaled defensive machine, seized the opportunity to grab defensive starlet Joleon Lescott. The England U-21 Intenational was ironically named to the Division 1 PFA all-star XI along with Izzet last year when Izzet was with Leicester City. An undiclosed sum was rumoured to be headed Wolverhampton's way, although the actual transaction may not be known for certain until both players officially sign with their new clubs and the transfer is made official by the Kick Off FA.

Frail was not reachable for comment, although he is believed to be the source of the leak. An Arsenal FC insider did say that Frail had been frustrated both with Izzet's performance and also his lack of finding Izzet playing time. The tough defensive style of play, which has become a trademark of Arsenal's play since the Gunners came under Frail's leadership, would seem ideal for the talented Lescott, who was also unreachable for comment. In summation the deal would appear to be mutually beneficial for both players and both clubs. Time will tell.

Arsenal remained the only team in the League with a 100% winning record today following a tidy romp over host Tottenham Hotspurs at White Hart Lane. Those that missed the match and failed to read the live commentary would have thought the match a much closer battle. Indeed the 3-2 victory hardly has the decisive lean, but if taken into account that Arsenal centre back Igor Tudor saw fit to chip one past Jerzy Dudek himself to the delight of the home side supporters then the outcome is a bit more tilted.

There can be no question now that Harry Kewell has won himself a place in the heart of every Gunner supporter. The Australian International scored a brace, with wing back Ashley Cole providing the tie-breaker late for victory. Gabe Frail had said of his club early in the week that Ronaldinho would need to be on form as well with Landon Donovan suspended from play after picking up his third booking last week. Although Ronaldinho did not score he turned provider, and Jermaine Pennant continued to impress as the youngster put in another stellar performance in a rare opportunity with the first-team, although it has been suggested that first-team performances from young attacking midfielder may become more the norm as time passes.

Still, the story of success this week was authored again by Harry Kewell, and Arsenal continue to find ways to win regardless of team personnel changes or opponent tactics.

press release from molineux

wolves have taken M_Izzet (arsenal) on loan!!! wolves manager imc said "since losing McCann to spurs we have been short in midfield and we see muzzy as ideal replacement" !!

17th August 2003

"Lee Hughes has been fined two weeks wages in accordance with internal disciplinary measures at MCFC. His actions on Saturday were unnecessary and if his dismissal had cost us the three points, I may have considered placing him on the transfer list. Other than that I thought the team defended very well when their backs were up against the wall."

post match interview at portman road

wolves manager imc was pleased his teams performance against ipswich (this seasons suprise package), " it was a good all round team display and pleasing that our strikers finally found the back of the net" with both dugarry & VHooijdonk opening their account for the season, imc went on to say " if we can find some consistancy this season there,s no reason why wolves cannot challenge for promotion, but we must become more consistant??

16th August 2003

Ipswich manager Andrew Archer last refused to confirm nor deny the rumours that Gerardo Torrado may be leaving Portman Road for Watford.

The deal, rumoured to be a player plus cash offer involving Mario Stanic is said to be almost complete

12th August 2003 *

"I kept the players in two hours after the terrible defeat against Bradford. This was by far the worst performance from any side I've put out while I've been at Manchester City. I have to take a portion of the blame as well as manager but the particularly inefficient and generally crap performance by a large number of the team is unexcusable. Any repeat performances like that display and I might have to make some wholesale changes to the squad."

12th August 2003

Ipswich manager Andrew Archer claimed his sides result against Blackburn was "Brilliant" and the players had once again done the club proud.

He singled out shay given for special praise after his performance in goal, Archer said "Shay has once agin kept us in the game with a string of marvellous saves, i cant believe i managed to get him at the price i did, he is magnificent.

Ipswich are proving the doubters and the bookies wrong this season as many predicted them to struggle but they are winning many plaudits with some excellent displays.

12th August 2003

The Arsenal FC Board of Directors charged manager Gabe Frail today with misconduct on the transfer front. Despite Frail's repeated claims that Arsenal will be fine with a player or two out while Landon Donovan and Eddie Pope sevre out lengthy loan spells, the Board have demanded that Frail attempt to secure a player or two on loan to "cover the Club's arse."

Frail was clearly aggitated by the Board's interference into personnel moves when he addressed a throng outside his gym today after a training session.

"As I've stated before, Arsenal are a talented side and although we may not appear to have the depth of other clubs, we will not be undone by the suspension of a player or two. It is not that I wish to not have the luxury of depth that other clubs enjoy, it is simply a fact that I feel the Board is stripping me of any credit for insisting that I will be unable to field a winning team with a few players missing. I find this insulting, especially after leading the Club to a 5 win start to the season."

Frail's trainer and physio both reported that his temper when accosted outside his gym were unsuprising as he had been muttering about this situation at the Football Club throughout his training regimine. While most that know Frail find this unsuprising a leading psychiatrist was reportedly ordered to the London Club's excutive offices. These reports are unsubstantiated but further information will be forthcoming as the situation progresses.

12th August 2003

Ronaldinho dazzled against Hotspurs in the Kick Off Cup to keep Arsenal FC's winning streak to open the season alive. Several football writers have been wondering if last season's Golden Boot performance by the Brazilian international had been a fluke. However, Ronaldinho netted a spectacular trifecta in 8 minutes of game play to give Arsenal the victory.

Unfortunately for the Gunners, they will likely need a similar performance out of their ace for the more important League clash with the Hotspurs this weekend after American striking starlet picked up his 3rd yellow of the season in the Cup clash and as such, has been suspended from the weekend's league tie. This is particularly bad timing as Donovan's backup, Nwankwo Kanu, is on loan at Wimbledon and back up defender Eddie Pope is on loan at Bradford City. Gunners boss Frail is optomistic though.

"We've been fortunate up to now to have kept the starting XI eligible through this match. Undoubtedly we have benefitted in at least one of our victories from loses that our opponents have sustained. The challenge to the lads this week is to keep the focus and pick up the slack. We are more than capable of carrying on without Landon for one match, but it will certainly be a test of how effectively the ladshave gelled as a team."

So Arsenal will travel to White Hart Lane without Donovan but one suspects that Frail will need to use one of his other starlets to match up against the Hotspurs on their home ground.

12th August 2003

Despite a 1-0 defeat at the weekend, Blackburn manager Päärn Volk was in high spirits after it was revealed that the managerial genius has captured the player he has admired for a long time. The player in question is the Colombian supergoleador, the Messiah of Medellin - Juan Pablo Angel.. The striker arrived from Watford, the Hornets recieving England veteran center-half Martin Keown in part-ex. The ex River Plate and Villa star will make his Rovers debut next week against Citeh but will have to wait another week to be united with his new strike partner, Brazilian striker-supremo Romario, after the Samba star was sent off in the game against Ipswich

THERE'S ONLY JUAN PABLO ANGEL!!!

12th August 2003

Liverpool boss Simon Walton had a few words to say after the Rotherham game which was a bit surprising after how angry he was the week before!

"Cant say im happy about the result infact im furious, scoring 4 goals and drawing, my defence is a joke! Cant believe Gerrards goal was disallowed but that kick up the backside I gave Owen seamed to have worked! I think Id better calm down now and go back to the drawing board so some team had better watch out cos my lads will be on the warpath from next week....I hope!

*********Is this the new Villa we are seeing?**********

After such an awful season last year, Aston Villa are finally proving they have what it takes to get back to the top flight and stake their claim there. Manager Craig Johnson was delighted with the sides 5-2 demolition of Fulham, especially with having 2 key players out of the game.

The form that H_Crespo is showing at the moment is unbelievable with almost every game hes played this season scoring goals and picking up the Man of the Match trophey!

Aston Villa are currently lying 2nd in the league on and are heading Kick Off Cup Group 1, this is what the Villa fans have been wanting to see and the arrival of Paul Robinson has also signalled the clubs future ambitions.

7th August 2003

MCFC released this press statement: We are following up our negotiations with Wolves to try and clinch the signing of Joseph Yobo. Without revealing the details of our offer, we at MCFC feel we have tabled a very worthy offer for the player and hope the deal can be concluded.

7th August 2003

In a recent Football365 interview, the MCFC boss commented on his new strikeforce. "Both Lee Hughes and Marcus Stewart are fairly new to the club. But they've both settled in well and seem to have worked up a good understanding with each other. Some quarters have suggested they're too similar to play upfront together but I think the stats speak for themselves. There's still room for improvement but I have been very pleased with the way things have worked out."

7th August 2003

Newcastle boss Matt Birch was caught by the press to answer questions regarding Simon Francis' proposed move from Forest.

Birch "Don't ask me, negotiations haven't really started and the only contact I've had from the Forest gaffer have been drunken phone calls and text messages at ungodly hours of the morning. If you ask me, that Mr Pyke is a bit of a nutter and if he wants to get somewhere in this game and make professional transfers then he better shape up sharpish. No wonder the likes of Francis handed in transfer requests. He's hardly setting a very good example to the youngsters in his squad and quite frankly, his recent Sesame Street prank along with Bradford boss Rich Kellett was just shameful."

*****Villa Park Press Report****

With Peter Schmeichel's playing days coming to an end we are on the verge of completing the signing of promising young keeper Paul Robinson from Newcastle in a deal believed to be worth approximately £3.5 milllion!

6th August 2003

It has been reported in the last hour that S_Francis may be leaving Nottingham Forest to join defending premiership champions Newcastle United.

There has so far been no statement from either club but a press release is expected to come tomorrow from Forest manager Adam Pyke.

If Francis were to move on, it would surely be a big step backwards for Forest who are building for the future.

6th August 2003

Toon boss Matt Birch acted quickly to sign three backup players after the departures of Paul Robinson, Didier Domi, Terry Sheringham and Paolo Wanchope.

Berry, Connelly and Duberry head straight into the reserve eleven whilst youngster M_Gordan is still in in negotiations over a move north from Wimbledon.

Birch "These are important signings as they give us valuable backup at bargain prices. I felt the time was right to bring in some cover as the market for these players has really bottomed out. But the search for a fifth quality defender must continue. Aldair is not going to be around forever and as old age creeps up on him, he is going to find it hard to keep playing week in, week out. Ideally I'd like to bring in a talented youngster to develop and eventually take over from him and with just over 15 million in the bank, I am hopeful to land my man. I'm not rushing anything though, we have to find the right man for the job and if that means waiting for a transfer list player then so be it."

Speaking for the first time this season briefly is the Liverpool manager Simon Walton!

KO: So Simon a quick word if thats possible

SW:  Only a quick one

KO:  OK what are your thoughts on the season so far Simon

SW:  Basically im not happy at all at the minute and there are going to be a few old campaigners leaving anfield this week and a few new faces coming in!

KO:  Short but sweet but obviously things arent all going well at Anfield!

4th August 2003

Arsenal finally got some validaton this week after beating a what even the press considered "worthy" team. Gunners' Boss Frail was not as thrilled as one might expect after defeating the former defending champs and Premiership title favourites.

"Well, I really think the lads did well, but no one can deny that was an ugly affair. Yes, the press can finally say we've been tested, but this was by a United side that was missing the game's most heralded striker and we played them on our home ground. We still only managed one goal scored by our offence, although the pressure obvious lead to the two own goals by the Red Devils. A win is a win but I don't expect that next leg of season series at Old Trafford will be nearly as inviting."

Gunners fans are really thiking big now, and after winning the Cup last season, Frail has made it plain that his club have significant less desire to defend their title than they do of taking the League as far as they can.

"We've been on top of the table before, we've won four in a row before, yet we have one trophy to show for all that, and it's not even the more coveted title. I know that our odds at winning either Cup or League are slim, but I think we have better odds in the League, the Cup is very much about chance and luck. The League is a grind, even with the new schedule and League divisions. We definitely would like to secure a spot in the knock-out phase of the Cup but I'll not do it at the expense of exposing my stars to injuries in matches that I don't feel they need to be invloved in."

Asked if Frail was saying that he would actually throw games he lost his smile.

"That would make me a real bloody hypocrite. I don't know how to play where I don't fancy a win as the outcome. I'm merely contemplating allowing some of my bench players to see more action than they normally get. I have full confidence in my less talented players because sitting and watching gives you desire. We'll make a game of no matter who we start with on the pitch, and I'm no fan of losing so you can imagine that I'll not be allowing my team to risk a loss for sake of keeping players eligible for League action."

Sources believe that despite Frail's talk, Arsenal is likely to field his regular starting XI, with the exception that Jermain Pennant may get his first taste of first team action this season.

4th August 2003

FS_Pongolle has been hailed by boss Adam Pyke after his explosive start to his Forest career.

The youngster has bagged 3 goals in 2 games after his transfer from Spurs.

"The lad had an unhappy time at Spurs, he didn't make an appearance for the first team but looked very handy in reserves, I had a few scouts sent down to watch him in action and the reports I got back were very impressive" commented boss Pyke.

Pongolle arrived for a fee of £5.5 million which was criticised widely by other managers and in the press but Mr. Pyke thinks the transfer was a steal.

"When their chairman said he was after 5.5 for him I nearly snapped his arm off, the kid has bags of talent and can go very far in football."

"He has pace, vision and can pass the ball around very nicely, he'll link up well with Corty in attack."

No other transfer activity has been reported as yet from Mr. Pyke but he could have something in the pipeline.

3rd August 2003

Newcastle fans were given much to cheer this weekend, firstly with the return of local hero Paul Devlin, then with a Devlin inspired first victory of the season against highly fancied Liverpool.

Finally, in the late hours of Sunday evening a deal was struck with Rotherham for the signature of young England midfielder Jermaine Jenas. Red tape will prevent the deal going through before the next cup game but Jenas will be available for the league game the following weekend.

Leaving St James' to go the other way are Domi, Sheringham and Wanchope.

Archer delight at win over Tykes

Andy Archer last night had nothing but praise for his players after the magnificent win over Barnsley.

Archer said " Before the match i said we were going out to win and thats exactly what the lads did, they responded brilliantly after the dismal showing last week"

He added " I think the guys knew they had something to prove, especially after Matty Wallings comments in the week, that seemed to spur us on today"

Speaking about Walling he said " I believe the matter to be closed, i shook his hand after the game and i hope this will be the end of the matter, i was disappointed with what he said but I am willing to bury the hatchet if he is"

SPURS SEE OFF LEEDS IN 9 GOAL THRILLER

As the final whistle blew at White Hart Lane, Edward Tomlin's face displayed a similar joy and relief to that of the Tottenham faithful at full time. At half time, it was Leeds that had the initiative with a stoppage time equaliser from being 3-1 down in a heartstopping first half. However, Spurs refused to give in and came out all guns blazing in the second half to gain a spectacular 6-3 win.

Edward Tomlin was not afraid to mince his words at full time: "Happy with the win, yeah, superb. This team's going to give me a heart attack I swear. We let in a sloppy goal before half time and my team talk changed completely. I gave 'em a kick up the backside and they probably played the best 45minutes since I've arrived here. If we could play like that all the time, well, I think the football just spoke volumes in that second half."

Despite the win, Tomlin must still harbour defensive worries. Along with Fulham and Liverpool, his Tottenham side have conceded more than anyone in the league although they have scored the most, averaging over 4 goals per game.

So a first win for Spurs in the Edward Tomlin era. Next up is the more daunting challenge of 2 consecutive North London Derbies (both at home) against Arsenal in League and Cup just after their impressive victory against Manchester United.

Edward Tomlin was philosophical on the subject: "Well Arsenal have got a huge reputation and great players, and we musn't be overawed by that. Two derby games, so I expect there's going to a bit of edge to both of them. They'll be expected to win both, so the pressure is on them to perform. We'll be playing our own game, working on a couple of things in training and if we get anything out of either game, it's a bonus. After the game today I want to see that same kind of battling spirit every match and if we see a performance like that second half, well - anything could happen to be honest."

Archer Blast for Walling

Ipswich bos Andrew Archer last night had harsh words for Matt Walling, the Barnsley boss.

Archer said " I saw the comments in the paper and it jut showed how pathetic Walling is, what i do at my club is my business, not his, how can he tell me how to run my club when his sorry bunch of idiots are running around the pitch like headless chickens every week, he should look at the league table."

On thi weekends game Archer commented " We are going out to give them a jolly good hiding, and i believe we will, Javier will have a field day against there defence, which is as much use as a chocolate teapot and that Makango kid up front will not get a kick against Pollet."

31st July 2003

Toon boss Matt Birch responded to quizzical remarks from Arsenal boss and close chum, Gabe Frail about his recent transfer activity.

Birch "During the close season I had a massive plan on how I wanted Newcastle to be re-shaped for this seasons title defence. The main problem with that plan was while I managed to sign some great players and gained a very strong squad, I had misread the impact the FA's new rules would have on the game. The squad would have done well carrying on from last season but the tactics I had envisaged using this season have turned out to be pretty awful. The team has shown no continuity, no team work and very little class.

That fault can only be put down to the manager and I have had to take drastic action to reverse the trend.

I thankfully have a great squad now which helps enormously when dealing in the transfer market and has allowed me to get stuck in pretty quickly.

The first priority I had was to bring back lucky omen, utility player Paul Devlin.

The sale of David Weir back to Wimbledon was a logical one, with Weir not fitting in with the Newcastle way. In return we gained cash which may as Gabe pointed out be saved for a later free agent, but may be used earlier with a bid having already been submitted for one true international class player. We also gained Teddy Sheringham who could be the third striker we need but he has only got two weeks to try and hold down his place in the squad so the pressure is really on him. The pressure is also on Niall Quinn to try and out-do Sherry and also on Big Al who has yet to produce the goods this season and is not indispensible.

Birch continued "This weekend see's another big game for us against Liverpool and with the second revolution half way completed, getting a result is going to be very difficult but the main point is to gauge that we are on the right tracks.

You can expect a very different style of play from us this weekend but it will only be an indication of the new Newcastle strategy. With two more players to come into the squad and with a few players fighting for their jobs it will at least be an exciting and open game"

30th July 2003

After a dissapointing start to the season, after spending great amounts of money you would think that Joe Davies would be done in the transfer market. But no, this week has seen fans favourite Mous Hadji move to the Dons and Kieron Dyer and young Lewis Emanuel move to the ambitious Wednesday. Joe had this to say...

'We all know how good Kieron can be, as long as he avoids injury im certain he can only help this team win some trophies. Only problem is i still havnt decided where i should play him, i want to play him in midfield as i think he could become one of the best in the game without a doubt, it would just take a while but he is a proven defender already.

My team is not quite what i want it to be yet, i would still like an attacking midfielder to play just behind the strikers and i will do my best to bring one in!

Lewis Emanuel will prove to be a good player in years to come, with me and theboys helping him out wherever we can do.

And id like to say howsad we all were to see Mous leave. Since he arrived last year he was one of our best players if not the best player last year and will be missed im sure but we wish him all the luck in the world at Wimbledon and im sure he will be just as good for Mike!

Cheers, wheres my pizza?!'

FRAIL VEXED BY NEWCASTLE TRANSFERS

Arsenal manager Gabe Frail has always known his friend Matt Birch at Newcastle to be a brilliant risk taker, but was struck dumb by moves that his mate made this week.

"Matt and I have always spoken of defensive might being the key to success so the recent activity that has seen the mighty Toon defense wittled down is a bit vexing, especially the timing with the Liverpool match. I know Matt is perplexed that he off-season romping through the transfer market has not yielded his lot a win yet, but either he's gone 'round the twist or he's stocking up cash flow for a future free agent."

Frail admitted that neither manager has ever seen eye to eye on how a team should be put together, although in the past he has expressed the similarity was no accident.

"Look at last season. Newcastle won the League and Arsenal won the Cup with very similar type of teams. This was not coincidence, this was two managers recognizing a formula for winning and using it."

Frail has publicly offered suggestions to his fellow manager when Matt had spoken out after victory eluded him for a 3rd straight week.

"I think that Matt is a great manager, but the new rules governing play, he's just getting used to using them after being surrounded by the theory for such a long time. I am not surprised that Matt has revoked his early pledge that he had his team set and was done with transfers, I'm just surprised at the direction he is taking."

Frail acknowledges vigourously that there is certainly more than one way to form up a team to win in this league and hopes that Newcastle find a way out of the hole.

"I'll never count out Matt Birch. The lad has a plan and he is driven to succeed. I do wish I knew what he was doing but that may be entirely the point. All I will say for certain is that if you are trying to build up an transfer offer to lure Ronnie or Kewell away from Highbury mate, you might do better rethinking that plan."

29th July 2003

Arsenal boss Gabe Frail did not allow a moment for celebration amongst his squad following their victory over Chelsea in the first tie of the Cup. Frail immediately reminded his lads that their first true test lay this weekend as the Gunners play host to Manchester United, but Frail has no intention of being a pleasant host.

"I wanted to impress upon the lads that despite the early success they have enjoyed, they've not proven themselves yet. Beating the Blues was a nice step, but Chelsea is notorious for starting slow and are not in the Premiership this season. Some of the lads and many f the supporters feel that Arsenal Football Club have made a statement, this is entirely wishful thinking. All opponents are a threat, that is the view I take, but it would be folly to deny that the Red Devils, the Reds and the Magpies are not the tougher opponent, and we've not played any of that lot."

It has been floated in the press that Frail is playing down the Gunners winning-streak start to take the attention off of his club and his players. Frail has continuouly coutered that he is merely being realistic and while he invites the supporters to go mad, he continues to drone that his job is to keep his players heads into what they are doing, as he feels his lads had a good shot late last season that they pissed away.

"That is what I'm trying to avoid. We were sitting atop the Premiership for 4 weeks late into the season and we managed to finish 4th in the league. Some have said the lads lost focus, and while I don't entirely disagree, that would concur with my feeling that the loss of focus was my fault, as it is my duty to have my boys ready to fight out every match. That is what the goal is this season. We've been written off early this time, and so more than ever I feel we have something to prove."

29th July 2003

"MCFC are very pleased to have signed the psychopathic Claus Jorgensen from Bradford City for the remainder of the season. He's not as psycho as Gary McCallister. But in case some young upstart like VanderVaart, Cole, Rooney or Chadwick start thinking they can play a bit against us, we'll send Claus out onto the pitch to break their legs."

29th July 2003

Barnsley's Matt Walling has blasted Ipswich Town boss Andrew Archer because of his apparent in-ability to control his own club. Over the past few weeks there has been much unrest at Portman Road involving players and coaching staff bust ups. Walling believes that Archer is acting very unproffesionally and is expecting far too much respect for such an inexpierienced manager:

"Obviously it's crazy to see stories all over the papers about Ipswich Town and Archer telling the press just who is getting fined and all the behing the scences stuff that shouldn't be getting mentioned. Archer should know better than that, what happens in the dressing room and on the training ground should stay there. This kind of behaviour will only stir up things at the club and he will only lose respect from it."

Barnsley play Ipswich at Oakwell this Saturday and Walling has made it no secret that he would like to get revenge on the narrow defeat towards the end of last season:

"That was gutting, we had several injuries to key players and had to put a very inexpierienced line-up out, but this season the squad is looking pretty fit so it should be a strong side put out, one things for sure, win, lose or draw we will take the result appropriately and most importantly...proffessionally!"

29th July 2003

After a busy fortnight in the transfer list seeing many players in and out of the club Wimbledon manager Mike Overill has expressed his delight at Securing the signings of former favourite David Weir and International star Mustafa Hadji.

"We at the club were very dissapointed when Weir left in pre-season to what was felt to be some underhand tactics from Newcastle and we are delighted that David is back where he belongs!"

"Hadji on the other hand is a player I had made no secret of my intent to sign, he is a brilliant player of premiership quaility and will do a great job for the club, and I would like to thank Joe at Sheff Wed for making this deal possible and I think it has proved beneficial to both clubs"

SPURS STRIKE AGAIN

The announcement of a Spurs press conference came like a shot in the dark for most football pundits. With manager Ed Tomlin adament that he would not let go of any of his star players to improve his squad, it was expected that he would find heavy weather in the currently inflated transfer market.

However, yet again Edward Tomlin walked out confidently with his newest signing into the White Hart Lane media centre. This time it is Gavin McCann that has signed, from cash strapped Wolves for only £5M. Not a Nedved, Toldo or a Hakan Sukur perhaps, but a decent player none the less, and probably the best Tomlin can afford considering his transfer aspirations.

"Well I wanted another midfielder and after a lot of hard work, I've got him", said a relieved but somewhat tired Edward Tomlin. "I've been negotiating for the past week with Wolves, but once they transfer listed him publicly due to their debt problems I decided to do all I could to get him as quickly as possible. I didn't want to lose him especially considering that DiMatteo wasn't exactly what I wanted and bringing Matt Holland in would have cost me nearly all me budget."

McCann is expected to provide competition in the Spurs midfield with Ince, who appears to have been given a reprieve after his commanding performance in the cup. As for McCann himself, he seemed to be pleased to be joining Tomlin's squad: "It's sad to be leaving Wolves, but I'm really looking forward to being able to play in the Premiership. I know I'll have to fight for my place, but that's what I'd expect in any Premiership team"

Edward Tomlin appears to be finally satisfied with his attack and midfield. He has only spent £10M total in reshaping his squad so far, after taking into account the departures of White Hart Lane. However, he has not looked at his defence as of yet and the cash is running out. Despite scoring 10 goals this season, his team have also conceded 10, it must be something at the back of his mind.

As usual, Tomlin refused to confirm anything as to what he'd do next. "I don't know if I'll be making any more deals, I doubt it to be honest. People seem to want the earth, or they want one of my star players, then I have to politely tell them they are not for sale. If I see a good bargain, I might make a small transfer, but right now I'll be happy training with the lads and having a bit of rest myself. As long as we can score goals, I'm pretty happy anyway."

Knowing Tomlin's start to management, there will probably be another of his press conferences in a week or two.

"press release from molineux"

In a week of in & outs at wolves hot on the heels of Stefan Freunds departure, Gavin McCann has left wolves to join Tottenham hotspur in a 5 million pound deal, wolves boss imc said, we wish McCann all the best at his new club and hope his dissaplinary record improves!!!!!!!!!!

27th July 2003

The announcement of a Spurs press conference came like a shot in the dark for most football pundits. With manager Ed Tomlin adament that we would not let go of any of his star players to improve his squad, it was expected that he would find heavy weather in the currently inflated transfer market.

However, yet again Edward Tomlin walked out confidently with his new signing into the White Hart Lane media centre.

Archer Blows a Fuse

Ipswich manager Andrew Archer last night confirmed that he had fined all the players who were a "disgrace to the town and to football in general" during the second half against Leeds.

Archer also had a four letter outburst about the referee, who he claimed was a f**cking prat who gave desciions in the way of the Premiership team.

Archer faces a disciplinary hearing over his outburst, but the players have come out and publicly appologised for the performance, which saw them get Archer'sversion of the famous Sir Alex Ferguson 'hairdryer'

*******Villa Park Latest News******

Despite the fact that i issued a hands off to managers regarding the sale of H_Crespo there seems to have been a renewed interest in the striker!

This player is not for sale as he is inspirational in the form of my team at present and will be during the remainder of the season.

So again please no more offers for the player as the answer will be simple - NO! If the player himself has a change of heart and would like a transfer away from the club then i will let you all know via the news reports!

Cheers Craig Johnson <Aston Villa>

Sheffield Wednesday's new improved squad today took one hell of a beating in the first stage of the cup games. A new impressive Sunderland showed their capabilities by upsetting a full strength new look wednesday.

Thiery Henry opened his account for the season with a fifth minute stunner, with great ball control Henry took on the Sheffield defence and launched a piledriver into the top corner, defender Marquez then got in on the act on twenty six minutes and doubled the lead.

The south yorkshire side never looked like troubling the safe gloves of tommy sorrenson and left dissapointed with their new overpriced signings having to go back to the drawing board.

Well done the Black Cats now lets get this seasons league campaign going in the sa,e direction.

TOMLIN SATISFIED WITH CUP SHOWING

After seeing his side draw 4-4 against Watford, Edward Tomlin seemed to be pleased with his weakened lineup, despite conceding an 87th minute penalty:

"Yeah, I thought we were unlucky in all fairness. Sometimes decisions don't go your way, I didn't see the penalty incident, so I can't really comment. Still, coming back from 2-0 down at half time, I had a chat with the lads during the break and it was a brilliant performance from them second half, it really was."

Despite giving many of his squad players and younger prospects a run out, Tomlin handed debuts to his new signings Pavel Nedved, Francesco Toldo, Hakan Sukur and Benito Carbone. Tomlin seems to have created a fearsome strikeforce, with his two new strikers (who will clearly be trying to oust Rebrov and Vieri) hitting 3 goals collectively on the night. Nedved was largely protected during the game, staying largely subdued and substituted at half time for starlet Joe Cole.

Spurs next face a tough game against Leeds in the league, with Nedved expected start against his former club. Tomlin has lately been linked to a move for Roberto Di Matteo, though he has admitted that a move for Ferdinand Coly is unlikely to materialise as Chelsea did not reply to his offer.

Chamionship winner with Sheff United and all around nice guy Andy Hinchcliffe is the latest arrival at Ewood Park. Andy made a name for himself as the highest scoring defender in Kick Off season 1 and joins another high-scoring stopper Marlon Broomes at the club. Hinchcy joined Blackburn from Fulham for part-ex deal that saw Ireland international Jeff Kenna and 175,000 moving the other way. Andy will make his debut next week against the championship chasing Sunderland and hopefully it will be a scoring debut.

25th July 2003

Ipswich manager Andrew Archer was said to be looking forward to the match with Leeds in the Kick Off cup.

Speaking on the subject Archer said " We have had a good start to the season in the league and the chance to test ourselves in the cup against class opposition can only benefit the lads"

Archer added " I expect us to be able to compete with Leeds, we wont buckle and with the forwards I have at my disposal anything is possible.

When asked about the possibility of bringing Roberto Di Matteo back from Barnsley Archer explained " Roberto is a class act, and is a player i am looking at, but I dont know if we will have the funds to complete a deal"

Newcastle boss Matt Birch started dipping his toes in the transfer market once more this week with the capture of G_Little from Arsenal as well as putting in bids for Barnsley veterans D_Gorre and N_Eaden.

Birch "Whilst the three players will not be troubling the regular starters in the team, I know from past experience that squad depth is valuable and these players will also provide an experienced backbone to the reserves. My assistant boss Stuart McCall has been taking charge of the reserves this season and has already singled out a couple of stars of the future, most notably a young 15 year old striker and he feels that getting these youngsters playing along side some experienced veterans can only speed up their development."

Birch however refused to go into further details on the confusion surrounding the possible transfer of Paul Devlin back to Newcastle.

Birch "I will not comment again on this situation at this time."

25th July 2003

Paul Rice has spoken about this weekends match with Arsenal.

Gabe at Arsenal has been speaking in the press about our relegation and the cup final. I even notice he apologised, which he had no need to do. he was entitled to his opinion, and at the end of the day we got relegated, and he won the cup, but to be fair it wasn't the last two games of the season that saw Chelsea get relegated, it was the dozens before it where we didn't perform to the level our fans expect. By the time the last two games came about i feel harry houdini couldn't have avoided the relegation trap.

As for Saturdays game, as far as we are concerned we want to win, but the cup final is behind us. We are looking ahead, to a succesful season. Looking at my squad i feel it is a lot stronger than the one that was relegated. Carton Cole is a terrific talent, I can't think of a better player in the world right now than Rafael VanDer Vaart, Phillipe Mexes is here and adds steel to the defence, and Buffon is the best in the business.

We will go to Arsenal to win, we will be preparing for a first round cup game, not a rerun of the cup final, and i hope we will come out of highbury with the win, not out of revenge, but looking forward to a new season.

25th July 2003

In a move to shore up his defence, and a sign of the revamp at Chelsea, Paul Rice has brought Phillipe Mexes the short journey from Fulham to Chelsea. Rice, a long term admirer of Mexes, has finally got his man, with Jimmy Floyd Hasslebaink moving in the opposite direction, possibly good news for teenage striking sensation Carlton Cole.

Hasslebaink will team up with Raul in what will form a fearsome strike force for the Cottagers, now under Adam Croft.

Rice, having brought in Kevin Pressman as cover for Buffon, Rafael van der Vaart, has moved on Gianfrance Zola and Lenny Pidgely a revamp at the bridge. He is now said to be “happy” with his squad.

Mexes will be unveiled to the Chelsea fans at half time in the cup match with Arsenal at Highbury

25th July 2003

Fulham manager Adam Croft is reported to be close to completing a deal with Blackburn Rovers. Blackburn are expected to pay £175,000 plus Jeff Kenna for Fulham defender Andy Hinchcliffe.

24th July 2003

Arsenal ace striker Ronaldinho has admitted that once he learned that the Gunners would be facing the Blues to kick off the Cup season, the Brazilian international was elated. Ruled out of the final, Ronaldinho had to watch from the sideline in agony as his side claimed victory in the final of a Cup season in which he played a large hand.

Gunners' boss Gabe Frail understands his ace's woes and desires. "You don't come to Europe just to participate in Cup play, you come to get the hardware. Ronnie got us the victory but I know how it feels to not be on the pitch when that final whistle blows. But make no mistake, he was the primary force behind our success."

Frail figures Ronaldinho to be in rare form on the weekend against Chelsea, although has expressed concern that his star may be too excited about the match ahead.

"I need Ronnie to keep his head, not just for this match but I need him to stay eligible and it is far too easy to get booked when you're hyped up. If he draws a yellow I may have to yank him because I can't afford to see him get that second one. My hope is that he will keep the focus he had almost all of last season's brilliant campaign. He really showed the league what he was made of, suplanting Thierry Henry as our ace. I knew he had the ability. The pace of his maturity has been startling though. Should make for a good match."

24th July 2003

Arsenal FC manager Gabe Frail finds his first tie of the knock-out stage of the Cup very dodgy.

"Well, it's not a one off if either side loses as there will be games to recover from a win, loss or draw but to have the first tie of the knock-out stage pit the two Cup finalists from the previous seasons on either sideline seems a bit off. However, I'm not sure that either club expected, or was expected, to get to the final last season so this is probably just a part of the parity of the league."

Frail figures that Chelsea will is likely to be looking to get some revenge for last season's Cup final.

"Well I made some comments leading up to that match that were not on. We did win, and I wasn't entirely humble about that either. I don't think that will play as much as the fact that the Blues came out on the losing end of things."

Although Frail seems full of apologies, he still questions the choice of Chelsea to rest starters down the stretch to ensure their fitness for the Cup final, ultimatley cloding what chance Chelsea had of avoiding league relegation.

"Chelsea is a Premiership callibre side and I really don't think all that was necessary. But, until they kick me out of Highbury and I'm running the show at Stamford Bridge it will just be my opinion and worth nothing but hot air."

CROFT HOPEFUL FOR FULHAM

New Fulham manager Adam Croft has stated that he plans to turn Fulham's fortunes around. The Cottagers currently sit at the bottom of the Barclaycard Premiership table, but Croft is convinced he can reverse the situation: "We've got a great squad of players - the potential is there, and it'll be my job over the coming weeks to bring that out and get these guys playing to the maximum of their abilities".

Croft also made it clear that none of Fulhams key players are currently for sale: "I've already had enquiries into the availability of some of my players, but I'm looking to build on what we already have here, and to see what can be done with the players we currently have".

SPURS LOOK TO INVEST FURTHER IN SQUAD

Despite the acquisitions of Pavel Nedved, Francesco Toldo, Hakan Sukur and Benito Carbone, it seems that Spurs manager is still eager to improve his squad. When questioned, manager Ed Tomlin said, "Yeah, we're still in need of a player or two, a defender or a defensive-type midfielder for sure, though it seems that it's proving quite difficult to a deal right now. I spent £12M on Nedved and I'm likely not to have much more available for the two additions I want to make. I don't want to spend silly money if I don't have to."

Rumours are rife about the claims of Herman Hreidarsson, Paul Ince, John Arne Riise and possibly even Markus Babbel of a place in the Tottenham squad. However, Tomlin's difficulties in finding the right deal may buy them time to prove themselves before he moves next in transfer market.

Spurs next face Watford in the Kick Off Cup, with Edward Tomlin mulling over whether to use it as a chance to test out his new signings or run the rule over his squad.

Newcastle United and Blackburn Rovers were left in turmoil last night after Paul Devlin, Paolo Wanchope and Henning Berg all turned up for training at the wrong clubs.
Being avid Daily Star readers, the three players assumed a deal had been done and dusted between the two clubs when in reality the tabloid had simply acted on reports from a homeless bum outside the Newcastle ground.
The Kick Off FA are investigating the situation, whilst bosses Birch and Volk are in discussions as to whether or not to make the transfer definite or not.
Birch told us earlier "I went out on the piss last night and stumbled past this tramp who recognised me and we had a chat and a few Tennants Super and the next minute I was telling him about this deal offer I had planned for Blackburn. I never thought he would be sober enough to tell anyone about it!"

MCFC confirmed that last season's goal machine Massimo Maccarone has gone on loan to Division side Barnsley for a 6 week period. A club statement confirmed: "Massimo still has a big future at this club but he needs to be playing week in, week out at this stage of his career. Barnsley have offered him that opportunity. We have all the confidence that he will be knocking them in regularly down at Oakwell. Although there is the possibility that the loan deal might be extended there is little chance of this move being made permanent."

Star Exclusive... Blackburn In Shock Toon Swoop!

Sources close to St James' Park reveal that Blackburn boss Paarn Volk has made a bid to lure Henning Berg back to Ewood.
The transfer of Paul Devlin to Blackburn in exchange for Berg and 2 million pounds seems to have turned sour for both teams with Newcastle missing Devlin's leadership and Devlin himself going AWOL for 3 weeks at Blackburn, refusing to play for any manager other than his 'mentor' Matt Birch.
It is revealed that Volk initially offered to make a complete reversal of the transfer but with Birch having spent big this summer and now penniless, the counter offer from Newcastle was a straight swap of Henning Berg and Paolo Wanchope for Paul Devlin.
The Daily Star will keep you updated, but remember... you heard it here first!

Barnsleyfc.co.uk has today officially announced that Spanish international striker Diego Tristan will be leaving the club to join up with Sean Mckeown at Coventry. The deal will see the former Deportivo la Coruna frontman switching Red for Skyblue in a £17m switch.

Barnsley manager Matt Walling had this to say:

"Well, obviously it's sad to see a player of Diego's class and Professionalism leave, but with what Coventry were putting down on the table there is absoloutly no way we could possibly say no. He had just over a year left on his contract and it was just not worth the risk."

Tristan will leave the basement club to join up with the promotion favourites pending he passes his medical but Walling has already set out in the search to buy a replacement forward, a position that he feels will be hard to fill in terms of bringing in as good a character that Tristan was.

More news will follow this story tomorrow when Diego will give his thoughts on the transfer and will speak of his time at Oakwell.

21st July 2003

Coventry City, today announced the signing of Diego Tristian from Barnsley, in a club record fee of £17million. Manager Sean Mckeown, has been a long time admirer of the player, even taking him on loan at Ipswich, at the end of the first season in an attempt to stay up.

There were rumours that M Viduka would be joining Coventry, with a deal almost done. Sean Mckeown had this to say. "There is no secret that a Top class striker was on my shopping list this summer, and a few players names were being bounded around. Yes, an offer was made for Mark Viduka, but the deal for Diego Tristian was more inviting, and a player, i knew wanted to come to this club. I feel Matt's valuation of Viduka was a bit off the mark, but it is a sellers market, with so little class around, so he could demand the fee he wanted for the player."

Diego had this to say. " I would like to thank everyone involved at Barnsley, ive enjoyed my 3 years at the club, the fan's, staff and especially Matt Walling, who bought me to this club and introduced me to English Football. I will have fond memories of Oakwell, and i will always have a soft spot for them. But, chances to work under a Coach as good as Sean Mckeown, dont come along that often, and when i see the team he is trying to build, im excited to be asked to become part of it. I would of liked to have won more with Barnsley, but i feel, i can fulfil my football potential with Coventry."

With this addition to Coventry's strikeforce, they surely will become a team to be reckoned with, this season. With Sean Mckeown, serious about mounting a KO Cup challenge.

It has been reported that Joe Davies believes he has found the correct balance for his team to challenge for honours this season.

At the back are such stars as big Sol Campbell, and two young proven centre backs in Kevin Hofland and Matthew Upson. Joe believes this is enough to handle the big strikers of the league.

In midifield he has a good mix of attacking and defensive minded midfielders. With the attacking left down to Mous Hadji and Fran Totti, he believes he will have no problem in finding goals from here. Then to win the ball and help out at the back he has young Djemba Djemba and Wednesday's record signing, pocket dinamo Ivan Gattuso who he was delighted to have signed.

Then up front to bang in the goals this year is Henrik Larsson who has more than proved himself in this game already and some believe he has taken a risk in bringing the young sensational talent that is Wayne Rooney. Joe hopes he can bring his magic in the Wednesday team and with all the other players help bring in some much needed silverwear!!!
